Zoe and Casey

On the 2nd May we completed our first boudoir workshop with Zoe, a superb stand in when our original model flaked out at the last minute and Casey.

In today's very competitive market it is important to have as many revenue opportunities to cushion those times when business is slow. Boudoir photography is becoming increasingly popular providing sensual and sexy images. It is a skill that is not easy to get right, however can be learnt and in conjunction with creative and simple lighting great images ensue.

A simple set up with the window ambient at 1/125s f7.1 The light on Zoe's back was set to match the ambient using an Elinchrom BX250ri head with a 100cm octagonal soft box triggered with the skyport radio transmitter.

Boudoir photography is about sexy sensual images that the bride to be wants to give to her groom, wearing as little as possible. For me boudoir is not about nude photography, more about the suggestion and sexuality of the bride. However this type of photography need not be restricted to just brides and works extremely well for any woman who wants to look sensual for their partner.

Boudoir is more about suggestion and the simplest lighting can produce results that I think work. In this shot I set up a single BX250Ri with a honeycomb grid on the floor. For the techies the shot was shot at 1/125s f14 on 200 iso.

Despite several heaters the temperature was just a little cool for zoe in this basque/corset shot, again the simplicity of the shot works for me using a single light again directional across the back. Slight underexposure to add intensity to the colour. Shot info: 1/125s @ f16 - 200 ISO.

I just loved the texture on the back wall and used a single head to light with a honeycombe tight against the wall. Having the light tight to the wall enhanced the stonework. The light on Casey was fron the front right and balanced to about 1 stop under the wall light with the overall exposure 1/125s @ f8 200 ISO.

In the afternoon we moved on to the white background set using a venetian blind to shoot through. Casey was lit with a BX250ri head and 100cm octagonal soft box from high. 1/125s @ f8 200 ISO

In the final minutes I set up two florescent lights either side of Casey and flagged them so they did not "blow" back to the camera. This setup will give you two rim lights with a shadow down the center of the subject that can be controlled by moving the white flags to provide the fill light. A very single and low cost way of achieving a stylish image.

Red Six joins forces with PW

in North Wiltshire

A question: What does a Red Arrows pilot do when he hangs his flying boots up and finishes with looping and rolling and military service with the Royal Air Force?

In North Wiltshire, Andy Cubin MBE (Squadron Leader retired and ex-Red 6) pursues a challenge that has a curious number of similarities to being a member of the world’s best aerobatic team.

Andy has completed the formation and is now wingman with award winning Terry Hewlett, who has been running successful photographic courses for the past 4 years under the banner photographyworkshops, including courses for the Royal Photographic Society and National Trust. Terry and Andy are inviting people to their latest local 2-day wedding photography workshop on the 29^th – 30^th April in North Wiltshire. Here is an opportunity to create a second income from your hobby as well as learning from a seasoned professional wedding photographer how to plan, prepare, shoot and produce the final product. The overriding experience, apart from learning about wedding photography, will be the fun, enjoyment, and enthusiasm that Terry brings to the occasion.

Continuing on from the 2-day intensive wedding workshop there is an opportunity to complete the training with a 1-day portfolio wedding album shoot on the 1^st May where you will be able to shoot all day producing stunning and creative portfolio images. Boudoir photography is gaining incredible momentum in the market place for brides who want to produce a sexy but tasteful gift to their partner.

Wedding workshop and portfolio shoot in Pembrokeshire

What a fantastic 3 days in west Wales on the Pembrokeshire coast, teaching and shooting stunning brides and grooms with the photographyworkshop delegates. The weather held fine for us with just enough cold wind to bites with its teeth or lash out with its tail.

My exposure on this shot was 1/3200s at f/4.5 - ISO 200 with a 30mm lens

Lighting was ambient plus a reflector

The first 2 days were about the business of wedding photography with a number of location shoots, including a pier that had seen better days. Fortunately the tide was out (proper planning) and the weather fair so of we pranced, fully loaded with kit and a model.

We tried a number of shots just using a reflector as the skies were clear and the sun bright so the micro mini would work well, silver side from about 4 meters, set about 45 degrees left of the camera position. I chose f/4.5 because I wanted to allow the background to diffuse slightly so the larger aperture worked well. There were some white buildings in the background that I did not want in the shot so camera position and viewpoint were quite critical.

We moved on to using speedlights for the later shots to demonstrate the art of balancing with the ambient light. In conditions like bright sunlight, close to noon, speedlights may struggle with their output, trying to match and balance f/22 when you are limited to your flash sync speed as we were, not having the latest gizmos that help resolve that issue.

Under the pier there was no opportunity to use the reflector effectively so pulled out the trusty Nikon flash heads in the interfit strobies XS brackets, triggered with the elinchrom universal skyport receiver and transmitter.

After about one and a half hours, covered in mud we returned for some well earned lunch and a chance to review the images.

Once the two day training was concluded, after covering marketing, planning, preparation, shooting the wedding and perceptive vision, finishing with digital workflow and presentation options including albums, we planned for the 1 full day of shooting on the 3rd day.

We were traveling a few miles south to Bosherton ponds and Broad Haven where there was a stunning beach setting, with a short stop over at the church.

With everyone loaded with kit, including elinchrom Quadras, speedlights, stands and cameras we walked down to the ponds to a location I new had a low bridge and maybe some swans.

The other advantage was the shelter it provided from the biting south westerly.

We worked around the many walkers crossing the single lane bridge, including a labrador who decided to take a swim, as long as he did not shake himself over the dress. The exercise was designed to teach the use of camera flash as a fill, using flash compensation.

The wind was starting to destroy the brides hair, however not time to get the hairdresser. The swan is a nice touch despite drawing the eye away from the bride. There are times when I like the swans and time when I will clone them out. It would have been nice if it was swimming towards us. I love the lighting on this shot.

It is possible to take these off-piste shots if you plan correctly on the day and if it's what the bride wants then make it happen. This shot needs a little bit of work to remove the people in the background on the bridge, oh the joys of location lighting.

We moved on after 30 minutes to drive to the beach and a short buffet lunch. Our hosts provided a superb buffet lunch which included welsh teacakes - yummie.

The second half of the day was spent on the beach and cliff top working with the Quadra. We needed the 400 w/s the quadra pushed out. The wind was blowing straight onto the beach, funneled by the cliffs, causing significant problems with the veil. If a bride is wearing a veil it is advisable to shoot any veil shots early as she is more than likely going to bin it after the groom has stepped on it several times and the wind makes it a bit of a handful.

We completed the shoot with some images on the cliff top, shooting from a low angle and balancing the f/22 ambient light with the quadra.

Decades of experience photographing at the highest level is paramount for successful fashion photography. In line with this (sorry for the pun) photography workshops have designed a workshop in fashion photography in conjunction with a local railway incorporating rolling stock, Railway lines, signal box and historic platform to provide one-on-one instruction and quality-produced shoots for building your portfolio. We will also help you to understand the market, presentation and marketing.

The signal box offered a very tight environment in which to shoot and required careful placement of the lighting. The lighting used was 3 speedlights modified with a soft box, and bounced to provide a balanced light, with a key light separating the models right arm from the background, all triggered with Einchrom universal skyports.

The key point in setting the lighting was to balance with the ambient light outside so as not to was the windows out. Setting out the lights we had a speedlight back left, unmodified, providing the separation and also adding a hair light, carefully balanced so as not to overpower the ambient falling on the right side form the window.

There was also the main light, with the soft box providing the main light to the model, set high about 20 degrees above the models head, placed behind me to the left.

The third light was set behind the levers to add just a very small amount of light to the models left leg, separating her hip from the background.

Portraiture is a very popular and revenue generating part of photography. Taking portraits, something we all do at some time, can be quite hard to get right.

On our lighting course we will make stunning images, exploring the elements that go to make and great picture. In both the Studio and on location transporting your imagery to the next level.

During the course there will be demonstrations of lighting techniques and image styling using a range of creative lighting techniques. Demonstrating lighting ratios and a range of light modification, including smoke, delivering extensive training that provides you with the essential knowledge to shoot superb images of your own.

There will be a detailed exploration of the potential of speedlite flash, examining the character of what is stunning light, using it to make your pictures more powerful and dramatic.

Gothic shoot part1

It has been some time since I last posted a blog, a great deal has been happening since the Savernake shoot. What with weddings, christenings and course I have been a busy bunny. Fortunately I was able to find a late afternoon to photograph Laura in a Gothic style shoot.

Having received permission to shoot in a local church yard I took all my gear, Elinchrom Ranger as well as EX580 flash heads to photograph Laura in the graveyard. The theme was based upon Gothic, however for me it was all about the lighting and creating a dark feel to the images with 4 lights. The location offered a number of options, however I wanted to develop a theme from a painting I had seen which was painted in 1782 by an 18th century artist called Henry Fuseli titled the "Nightmare". I was not interested in doing a straight copy, just to develop the theme.

Setting up at dusk I wanted to shoot just before twilight so that there was enough light to work, despite having a head-light, and set an aperture that would render the background dark enough and use the Rangers to expose those parts of the graveyard and Laura that I wanted lit.

I had also intended to put a little smoke into the picture but did not have a suitable smoke machine that would work on batteries alone so I resorted to some smoke pellets from the local "Giant Party Shop". Never having used them before I was disappointed that they only provided about 10 seconds of smoke and the smell was just sickening - never use them again. I resigned myself to once again fall back on the trusty faithful - Photoshop©.

When I showed one of the final images to a fellow photographer he asked me if I had added the church window, well the emphatic answer was NO. It was all done with lighting. I must admit, however I did add the moon.

So with one light on the window, one light on the tomb behind Laura, one for the smoke (back lit) and finally one for Laura with a honeycomb I was ready to shoot.

It was an interesting shoot that I think produced some interesting images. I have been considering a night shoot for my courses using local ambient lighting combined with flash so if anyone is interested please feel free to email me with your suggestions.

Elinchrom Quadra off with the Fairies - Part 1

Extensive research and miles of walking was what it took to find the locations for the fairie and avenger series for the al-fresco shoot.

This was the first shot 100 ISO f8 at 1/125s

I found 2 (secret) locations that provide the opportunity for great texture, depth and creative lighting.

The brief was to provide several sets of images for Sarah that had a fairie and avenger theme. I knew that there was going to be some post-production, however it was all about lighting the sets to provide the mood and feel I was looking for.

So after several meetings with Sarah (the model) to determine outfits and props, as well as a visit to the local Party shop for a “plastic” Samuri sword which was to be post produced on the final image with a real sword, we set off to the magic and mystical forest.

A small addition

The plan was to use one of the locations for the morning and then the other for the afternoon shoot. So the fairie theme set for the morning was to be a 4 light set, main, background and a couple of texture lights.

When setting up more than one light I always set one light at a time. A light set needs to be built from the ground up so that you can see what each light is doing. I initially set the texture lights, one from the low right (at almost ground level), bringing out the root structure and texture. A sidelight at almost 90 degrees to the subject will always help to emphasise any texture that exists. I used an Elinchrom Quadra supplied by the “Flash Centre” with a 20-degree honeycomb grid to help control the direction and focus of the light. The root structure also needed a light from 45 degrees further round to the right and behind (90 degrees from the camera position) to create a little more depth and texture to the roots. Here I used my EOS 580EX with a Holne 1/4 grid. My shooting aperture was f8 at 1/125s on 100 ISO which was 3 stops above the under the tree canopy, therefore my lights would provide controllable lighting.

Once the side lights were set I wanted to light the stump in the background, to add further depth to the image so I set an Elinchrom Ranger, with a 20-degree grid to wash light over the stump in the background. It was important that all the secondary lights appear to come from the same direction and set to f8.

The main light was placed off to the left, elevated about 45 degrees and was another Elinchrom Ranger pack with a 20-degree grid. Grids proved a softer edge that snoots and have a tighter cone of light than reflectors or soft boxes. The plan was to light Sarah with the grid, providing a vignette to the light. The light was elevated, directing the cone of light down onto Sarah, but not spilling out on to the rest on the scene.

I was to shooting on a tripod with the Powerbook G4 and Capture One so that I could get a decent view of the final images. My 1D Mark 2 has a very small view screen and I wanted to view the largest image possible, incidentally the whole day consumed Powerbook batteries. A generator was considered but without a support team I needed to keep equipment to a minimum.

The concept was to create, as realistic as possible, a fairie image holding a butterfly and also an aggressive fairie defending her self. Why? - I have no idea, it was just one of those occasions when I tend to think outside the box. I did not want to create stereotype fairie images. I can’t say I am into fairies, its Sarah who has the passion for them, it was an opportunity to create interesting and more complex lighting sets.

A buffet lunch will be provided and during lunch Terry will be on hand to go through with individuals any aspects of the day they have not fully understood. The course starts at 9:30 am and finishes around 4pm on Sunday 22nd November 2009.

Wedding Photography workshops (Aug 09) Part 1

Over the past five days I have been running my wedding photography courses both for the RPS and mine, with a great bunch of delegates producing some fantastic images. The primary element they all wanted to learn was how to use their flashguns both correctly and creatively, and the general comments after the course were “ well I never thought I could do that – that has really opened my eyes”.

The first 2 day course was for the RPS with 15 delegates, however this course does not include the shots inside the Church, as well as only being 3 shoots and not 4 as on my 2 day portfolio course.

After an initial introduction, and a what’s in the bag session, we started getting to grips with the flashgun. I provided instruction on how to control the flash output either through ETTL (canon) and flash compensation or working with the flashgun on the manual settings. I went on to demonstrate how you can control the ambient light with the shutter.

After a very brief demonstration we went outside to start creating some bridal shots with delightful Katie (she is my daughter so I am biased). However I will not be able to use her shortly as she told us the other week that she was pregnant, I am not sure how Mark her Husband will feel about using Katie for a shotgun wedding shoot!

This first image was shot with just 1 speedlite un-modified and you can see the hard shadow it has created. The ambient lighting was rather flat and so I wanted to use the flash as the main light.

This first set up was against an old barn type door that was more than likely used by Henry Fox Talbot, the inventor of the negative positive process, as he lived in the adjacent Abbey in Lacock at the time. The first shot I set up was using a single speed-light, and at the same time demonstrated the use of a light meter. It never ceases to amaze me how creative you can be with just 1one light, despite all the electronic triggers suddenly stopped working all at once. Henry was upset I think so after a few kind words to him they all started again.

I used the speed-light unmodified (no soft box or umbrella) to demonstrate the edgy light that I personally like, however we did move on to using a shoot through umbrella to produce a much softer light. The use of an umbrella is brilliant on location it is light and easy to carry, however does need either a “voice activated light stand” or a sandbag to hold in down in the lightest of winds.

Here I went for a much softer feel to the image and shot this one with a shoot through umbrella.

The general rule is the smaller the light source the harder the light will be, a larger light source will be softer.

This is the RPS course, with 15 delegates and 15 wellington boots.

When shooting outside, with off-camera flash, I first need to take an ambient light reading, as that is what I will be balancing my flash to. The reading is an incident reading, unlike the reflected reading through the camera which I often use when shooting a wedding, however care is needed when taking “in camera” meter readings, say at a wedding, due to the fact that they are reflected light readings, so I tend to take an evaluative reading as opposed to spot readings to prevent either under exposure if the reading was taken from the dress or overexposure if the reading is form the suit.

The advantage of getting into the ford was the ability to get images like this, with Mark the groom in the background.

This again was a shot from the ford but with the flash zoomed to 105mm to vignette the light.

Once I have my ambient reading I then make the creative choice for the flash, do I want it as a fill or the main light. Once I have made this decision I will then set the flash manually to the desired output.

Creative lighting Aug 09 Part 2

This is the second part of the 1-day creative lighting workshop help the other week. Initially we shot in the grounds of Bowood and then moved on to the Brunel Bridge in Chippenham (post: Monday, 10 August 2009) to get a little more creative.

After the railings we moved under the arches to create some close up contemporary portraits with a single Elinchrom Quadra. Sarah needed to change from the wedding dress into jeans and tops, primarily because we now wanted to move away from the wedding theme and also the dress had become dirty with the climbing antics of Sarah.

The first image shows the simple set up using a reflector and grid to produce the shaped lighting. We wanted to bring out the stone texture and so placed the light tight to the wall. I would love to have found a location that has a great deal more graffiti, maybe even Banksy, however my council tax has been used by the town council to clean up all the graffiti around the town so it is becoming more difficult to find these kind of locations locally, maybe I need to travel further.

Incidentally if anyone knows of any locations I am prepared to travel for these 1-day workshops providing enough delegates attend (maximum 5),

After the bridges we moved to a more exposed location to demonstrate flash control in full sun, so we travelled to Avebury the site of the Neolithic standing stones.

The exercise here was to balance the ambient with flash to retain the detail in the sky and initially with only one flash. Under these circumstances the little speedlights are sometimes just not man enough, unless you use a bank of then.

The process here is to take the ambient reading and then a flash meter reading, balancing them to create the sort of image you are looking for. The first shot here shows the set up with the Quadra, using the sun as the hair light and at the same time retaining the sky detail. The second shot is the final image.

If Quadra’s are not available the same can be created with a conventional flashgun, provided there is enough output from the unit being used. I have shown a set-up I often use at weddings using my speedlight with the Elinchrom Skyport Universal received and radio transmitter.

Before I move on to the next part of the shoot, to be continued in the next couple of days, I just want to provide some technical information for the Elinchrom Ranger Quadra units we were using on the day, which incidentally performed faultlessly.

The Quadra offers advanced features in a compact and lightweight unit; this new flash system represents one of the most significant advances in professional lighting in many years. The AS stands for ‘asymmetrical', which means one flash-head can fire at 66% power and the second head at 33%, for a true 2:1 lighting ratio when needed.

Other significant features include an in-built Elinchrom Skyport radio remote receiver for wireless triggering and control over power settings. The new Ranger Quadra AS with head. (Source: Elinchrom.) 

At 400Ws output, the Ranger Quadra AS is less powerful than Elinchrom's Ranger RX at 1100Ws, but is significantly lighter and packs enough punch for location portraiture. Two lightweight heads are available, the standard RQS and high-speed RQA which freezes action with a 1/6000s strobe burst. The 12-volt 3.2 Ah lead-gel battery charges in only 1.5 hours and delivers up to 150 flashes at maximum power or 2,000 flashes at minimum power. The modeling light is a low-energy 20W LED array delivering the equivalent of a 50W Halogen lamp with a colour temperature of 5500K.

Creative Lighting August 09 - Part 1

Wow what another great day, great weather, delegates and a model, what more could I ask for. This course had been postponed twice because of the terrible weather over the past few weeks however this past weekend was scheduled to be great, no rain, snow or tornadoes.

We all met at the Bowood Golf and Country club Brazierie for a coffee before venturing out into the grounds for the initial shoot. I usually start with Sarah in a bridal dress, however the course is designed around what the delegates want and Sarah arrives with a whole wardrobe to change into should she need to.

The initial shot was set up with the Elinchrom Ranger Quadra, small, compact AND lightweight 400 w/s portable flash unit, available as a single and double head pack. The unit comes complete with Quadra Pack, Battery, Q head,2.5M cable, charger and an Elinchrom Skyport trigger (the Quadra comes with the receiver built in).

My first set up was with just one light and the Ranger Quadra 40cm soft-box front right. I took an ambient reading and balanced the flash output to complement the ambient. I also used the small amount of ambient as hair light. If this had not been available I would have set another Quadra rear left to provide one.

I took several shots however the one I preferred was this one taken with my 15mm fish-eye. I just love the light falling on the ferns in the background, which I think adds depth to the image. I have not worked this image as yet but may well consider adding a little computer magic with smoke and flare, however I have done that before so may well try for something different but have no ideas as yet, so if anyone can suggest a treatment then I will consider it and have a go.

Sarah brought with her some props and so we thought we would have a go with the mask, which I think works very well. There was a problem however lighting the eyes properly, in our first shots one eye was not lit properly with a shadow being cast by the mask, and personally I did not like it, so moving the light and using a California Micro Mini Sunbounce to provide fill I was able to get both eyes lit correctly.

After about 2 hours shooting we retired to the Brazierie for lunch and discuss what we had achieved so far.

Our net location was to be in the middle of the market town of Chippenham, using ISAMBARD KINGDOM BRUNEL’s (1806 – 1859) viaduct, built in 1841, a nine arch viaduct to carry Brunel's Great Western Railway over the town.

I have used these arches in the past, both day and night and they provide a striking backdrop, particularly at night when they are lit with up-lighters.

Again using just 1 Ranger Quadra, Sarah started climbing, great images but unfortunately made the dress dirty and so was not available for the rest of the day. Not to worry, we moved on to tee shirt tops and dress's, Sarah that is, not us.

The 2 shots here were representative of what was achieved with just 1 light and I have included a set up shot to illustrate the position of the Quadra.

After helping Sarah down - photographers perks - we moved from the railings to another location just under the bridge but those images are for the next post, as well as additional shots at a neolithic location.

These creative lighting courses are limited to 5 delegates, however will run with only 2. I am flexible on dates and therefore you will not find any on my photography workshop site, so if you are interested then please either call or email and I can discuss suitable dates and times etc.

Sun - Sniper from California Sunbounce

Look at what has just landed on my desk, or shoulder should I say.

Since early 2007 I have been unable to carry a camera around my neck due to a cervical spine operation and with disc C3 still touching my spinal chord, any strap around my neck was a no-no.

Up until now I have been using the Canon hand strap which I found excellent and provided me with instant access to the camera when shooting weddings.

The problem however was that the strain on wrist and elbow was taking its toll, particularly when I was using the 70-200 f 2.8 lens. California Sun-bounce have now come up with a great solution, the Sun Sniper strap.

There are 6 very good reasons why this particular strap wins out over the conventional neck strap.

Wedding Course Part 1:

Yet another very successful course held in the great National Trust Village of Lacock in Wiltshire.

With 11 delegates we were able to shoot on location with 8 separate sets, using an combination of speedlites and the Elinchrom Ranger Quadra lights. Day one was promising to be wet so some changes were made to the itinery, with all the shooting done on the second day.

The course is designed to provide people with the required skills to go and do a wedding shoot successfully, from planning to execution and post production, however the shooting opportunities and use of flash is the one element that people find both challenging and constructive. The delegates came away feeling that they understood their flash units and were now able to use them more creatively.

So on the first shoot, after demonstrating the control of the ambient light when using the speedlite, we went outside and started producing some creative images. Sarah, the model was extremely patient and willing to sit in the same position for ages while I whittled on about the benefits of taking the flash off camera.

The first shot was designed to show how the lighting can be improved considerably when taking the flash of the hot shoe and placing it on a stand using the Kaiser Hot Shoe adapter, shooting with the Elinchrom Skyport universal receiver and radio trigger.

With the speedlite placed to the right hand side and elevated I have used it as the main source of light, with the ambient as fill. It's an OK shot but can be improved as seen in the second image. The speedlite has been used without any light modifying, however later on we did use a shoot through umbrella to soften the light considerably.

With a change in composition and control of the shutter ( ambient light control) I produced and image that any bride would be proud to have in their album, by the way I use Queensberry Albums.

When everyone had the chance to shoot this set, using triggers supplied by the Flash Centre, we moved on to another "grunge" location, however that is for a later blog.

Before lunch we all moved on to the local Church, St Cyriacs, in Lacock where I demonstrated the control needed to used on camera flash in what is difficult lighting conditions. What we want to do is create beauty lighting using just our speedlite and a Micro - Mini Californian Sunbounce.

This above shot was taken with just ambient light and is just about acceptable but not brilliant. The use of on camera flash at this stage would produce a flatly lit image with the possibility of a harsh shadow behind the bride if suitable control of the flash was not exercised.

However taking the flash off camera and using the Micro - mini as a reflector with the speedlite from the left hand side I was able to create a more balanced light, working with the ambient light from the right hand window, a characteristic of this church at this time of day (12:30pm).

I have changed from my 24-70mm L series lens tomy lens to the 15mm L series fisheye because when shooting these sets in the church I will take as many shots as I can from different viewpoints and lens choice.

2 Day Wedding Course June 09

The forecast for the Saturday was wet, improving for the Sunday so I was expecting to do a little juggling with the programme, however the weather forecast,fortunately was not quite correct and we had 2 dry days.

We had a little jiggling to do around the set for Cranford that was being created for forthcoming filming.

James,one of the delegates has emailed me following the course, with some images he took on the day as well as his experiences on his first major wedding after the course where he had to handle the Paparazzi around Stephen Fry, who was attending the wedding. Oh what it is to work with Celebs.

Here are a few of his images form the course, where I demonstrated the control and balance of ambient light with flash, both camera and battery powered studio lights, Elinchrom Ranger and Quadra.

I do like "Grunge" settings, helping to enhance the beauty of the bride against textured settings. This location is around the back of the Tythe Barn, and being in the shade enables creative use of flash. The only comment I would make on this image is that I would have removed the padlock on the door above Sarah's head.

In the last set I do, we move into the Tythe Barn which is ideal for demonstrating the control of ambient light with the shutter speed. Here I set up an Elinchrom Ranger (1200 w/s) pack with a reflector and homey-combe grid to provide directional lighting tight to the wall. I love this location, despite an extremely dusty floor. The textuture on the walls as well as the whole feel of the place is just great.It also works on wet days.

We completed the two days ( 4 location shoots) with a 2 light set up. One Ranger on Sarah with a Grid to provide tight directional lighting and the second on Mark, simulating ambient light falling through the high windows to the right (just out of shot,believe me they are there).

The 2 lights were balanced and away we went, everybody shooting with Elinchrom Skyport triggers, all available from the Flash Centre.

What a great 2 days.

Wedding Photography Course June 6^th and 7^th

Yet another great weekend at Lacock with Sarah and Simon, demonstrating the techniques for balancing ambient light with flash (off camera).

The weather was not very promising, however someone was looking down on us as we had great weather, despite the forecast for rain.

We were able to make use of the wonderful locations, despite preparations for the filming of Cranfield Chronicles over the weekend. Certain locations like the Tythe Barn were off limits but the National Trust came up trumps and allowed me to use Lacock Abbey on the Sunday morning.

The back of the tythe barn provides a great location with textured doors and great stonework, helping to demonstrate the control of flash using my Canon Speedlight 580 EX on a stand.

I like to use my 70/200 2:8 for shallow depth of field, isolating the main subject from the background, really effective.

Those that know me will be aware that I just love using the fish-eye lens for my more creative images and here a low viewpoint, with off camera flash and the fish-eye makes for a stunning image.

Just using the ambient and the fish-eye I have created a visually interesting image. The use of the vanishing point in the bottom left third of the image and Sarah in the right hand third provides energy as well as balance.

Elinchrom Quadra off with the Fairies - Part 1

I found 2 (secret) locations that provide the opportunity for great texture, depth and creative lighting.

The brief was to provide several sets of images for Sarah that had a fairie and avenger theme. I knew that there was going to be some post-production, however it was all about lighting the sets to provide the mood and feel I was looking for.

So after several meetings with Sarah (the model) to determine outfits and props, as well as a visit to the local Party shop for a “plastic” Samuri sword which was to be post produced on the final image with a real sword, we set off to the magic and mystical forest.

A small addition

The plan was to use one of the locations for the morning and then the other for the afternoon shoot. So the fairie theme set for the morning was to be a 4 light set, main, background and a couple of texture lights.
